Reus is located in the northeast of Spain on the Costa Dorada. It is a historic city with a number of interesting places to visit and when you need to take some time out, there is a wide variety of bars, restaurants and shops.
Reus airport is only 2 km from the city and about 80 km south of Barcelona on the CN-420 road to Tarragona. From Reus train station there is a daily train service to Barcelona which takes about 55 minutes.
The best way to explore Reus and its surroundings is by car. The location is easy to drive to near the Autopista del Mediterráneo, which is the main motorway running from north to south along the east coast of Spain. From the highway follow the T-315 that goes directly to Reus. If you are approaching from the west of Spain, drive on the main highway E-90 and join the N-420 towards Baden.
Reus is probably most famous for being the home of the famous architect Antoni Gaudí, but it has no examples of his work and the best modernist creations are by Lluis Domenech I Montaner, including the Pere Mata Institute, Casa Navàs, Casa Rull and Gasul House.
Reus has stood out for many centuries for the production of wines and spirits (particularly brandy). Other products include olives and hazelnuts. A recommended tour of Reus starts at Plaza de Prim with its beautiful Teatro Fortuny along Calle de Monterols to Plaza del Mercadal with the modernist Casa Navas which still retains all its period furniture, coffered ceilings and lamps. The Plaza de Sant Pere has a 16th century Gothic church with an octagonal bell tower from whose top you can see the entire Costa Dorada.
In the old town of Reus you will find the Gothic church of San Pedro (Antonio Gaudí was baptized here on June 26, 1852), and the Prim-Rull Museum. The Reus Tourist Office offers scheduled excursions to buildings generally closed to the public and free admission to the Salvador Vilaseca Museum and the Museum of Art and History with paintings and drawings by Maria Fortuny and Joan Rebull.
In the month of June, Reus celebrates its main festivals with live music in the squares every night and street shows such as the Castellers, which are the famous towers made of men. Once you have seen the main attractions that the city of Reus has to offer, you can consider a day trip to Tarragona, Salou or Montblanc.
TARRAGONA
Tarragona is a very full day of tourism. It is located just 15 km by car from Reus along the N-420A, C14, T11 and A7 motorways. It is the capital of the Costa Dorada, located on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Tarragona has a large number of tourist attractions concentrated in a small space.
It was invaded by the Romans in 218 BC. C. and most of the monuments that make up the cultural heritage of the city were built during the Roman occupation, including the amphitheatre, the aqueduct and the Scipio Tower. The Roman city wall was built in the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. C. a good part of it is still preserved together with three towers from the same period.
Its imposing Romanesque-Gothic style cathedral has one of the best cloisters in Spain dating from the 13th century. Nearby are the archiepiscopal palace and the archaeological museum. You will find almost everything that interests you within the old city walls. The most important street is Las Ramblas, which leads to a large viewpoint called the Balcón de Europa, which dominates the lower part of the city and the fishing district of Serrallo.
Tarragona is a port and commercial center that exports some of the best wines in Spain that are produced in the nearby Priorat region. Also the Carthusian monks who were expelled from La Grande Chartreuse in France in 1903 settled in the town and still produce its famous green chartreuse liqueur.
SALOU
It is only 10 km west of Tarragona and 10 km from Reus city center via the C14 and C31B motorways.
Salou is spread out quite a bit and merges with the neighboring resorts of La Pineda to the east and Cambrils to the west, all of which have clean sandy beaches and secluded rocky coves. Salou is also packed with entertainment for all ages, including water sports at a water park, go-karting, and Universal’s Port Aventura, which is a huge theme park modeled after Florida’s Busch Gardens.
Salou’s promenade has beautiful gardens and parks with fountains that light up at night. It offers lively entertainment with several British-style nightclubs, bars and pubs.
mont blanc
It is a medieval town just 30 km from Reus on the C14 and N240A roads. Montblanc, a former residence of kings and knights, is the place where Saint George reportedly slayed the dragon. In the town there is a commemorative tablet of the feat.
The duchy of Montblanc was created by King John I in 1387. In the Middle Ages, Montblanc had its own fairs and markets and a notable Jewish community. It preserves two thirds of the original walled enclosure from the 15th century, the towers and the gates of Sant Jordi and Bover and was declared a monument of historical-artistic value in 1947.
The majestic Gothic church of Santa María with its Baroque portal has a stone altarpiece dedicated to Saints Bernardo and Barnabas. You can also visit the churches of Sant Miquel from the 13th century with a Romanesque façade; the church of Sant Francesc and the church and hospital of Santa Magdalena with a Renaissance cloister.
