Throughout the history of the game of golf, golf bags have paralleled the progression of the game. If you were to go back to the birth of golf in Scotland, golf bags didn’t even exist. Players would normally carry their different clubs or simply tie them with some kind of cord. In fact, golf was banned almost immediately in 1457 in Scotland, as it distracted the Scottish army from training. The Scottish monarchy believed that carrying clubs without golf bags was not enough physical training. Luckily for us, the ban was lifted in 1502 and golf would become a recognized sport and hobby.

It would be many years before golf club bags were invented. At the end of the 19th century, a modern golf ball and the first carrying bag of clubs were invented. The duffel bag was less than 35 inches tall, had metal ends for protection and shape, and a 4.4-inch opening at one end where he placed his clubs. This little mouth bag would be used until the 1930s.

After WWII, the carry bag evolved again with play. The small mouth was too small for many golfers, as it could normally only carry a small number of clubs. As the nine-hole game evolved, more clubs were introduced to offer an arsenal of clubs to attack the greens. The lightweight material, such as nylon and plastic, has been replaced by the outdated leather material. Not only was the new club bag easier to transport, it accommodated more clubs and even included additional space for storing balls, gloves, and even books.

With the invention of the golf cart in 1956, the carry bag lost popularity. Even with all the improvements to the bag, they were still difficult to transport. The new car made playing a nine-hole round much easier and faster. To respond to the golf cart threat, the creators implemented back straps and tripods on the bag, making it easy to walk around the course. In addition to the improvements in the transport of the club bags, the creators molded the bottom of the bags to facilitate their storage in the new golf carts. These improvements can still be seen in the world today.

When it comes to modern golf club bags, the limits are endless. There are many different types of carry bags to suit the needs of each golfer. The club bags are now even bigger, weigh less, are more fashionable, are more durable and some even include a special pocket for cell phones. Most importantly, the golf club bag remains a symbol of the great game today.

To think that modern golf bags originated from little leather bags is pretty incredible. Sure, the history of golf bags has changed and improved as much as the game of golf, but as the game of golf changes, so will golf bags.
