Dogs chew and bite on many things for a variety of reasons. Puppies and new dogs may do this because they are teething. They are exploring the new environment in which they live. Alternatively, your dog must be very bored and just looking to pass the time.
Monitor your dog closely and catch him red-handed. Be firm and let him know that what he did was wrong. Dogs learn “in the moment,” so this method works best. Teach him acceptable behavior, such as chewing on a toy.
If you’re not around all the time, it’s best to put your dog in a pen or outside the house. Don’t leave it unattended for long periods of time, especially around high-value furniture.
Give your dog something to chew on or, better yet, something else to do. Twigs and small tree branches provide great distractions. Dogs love to chew on wood. A large beef marrow should be enough to keep you busy.
You can also purchase chew toys of different designs at your local pet store. Some even have the benefit of cleaning your dog’s teeth. Exercising a lot should wear it out.
