The Greatest Networker In the World is John Fogg’s classic story of learning the ways of network marketing. It details the story (a parable) about a young man who is about to give up network marketing. The young man is then introduced to an old “MLM Master”, whom everyone calls the best Networker in the world. He then learns from this old master a new way of seeing himself in his relationship to his business, partners, and even his life.

He then goes through a metamorphosis process from burnout to enthusiastic student, learning all about team building, personal growth, and responsibility. It is an entertaining book.

There is a critical piece of the puzzle that this book does not address, and that is the importance of using sound marketing techniques. While many fail in MLM due to motivation, laziness, and other character issues, many more fail because they are using a marketing system that stopped working 50 years ago. Many people are still taught to prospect their “friends and family” and treat them as viable business partners and sources of income. That’s just not the way to run a real business.

Real companies need new people coming through the door every day. The idea that you only need “two or three winning people” is like saying you only need “two or three winning lottery tickets”: while it may be true, betting the house on such a find is a myth. McDonald’s builds a business system that tests their business so hormonal 16-year-olds can be held accountable for delivering their product, predictably and profitably. When you’re building your business, I suggest you follow suit.
