You’ve probably had salespeople come to your home and start recommending inverter ducted air conditioners. And most likely you don’t fully understand how it works.

Well here is a basic explanation of Inverter drives.
You see, a basic conventional system has a basic engine, just like your car. This motor basically has two speeds. At full speed and stop.

These systems use a lot of electricity in these types of motors because it takes a lot of energy to start a motor from ZERO. And when your home reaches the temperature you requested on your climate control thermostat, the engine will shut off completely.

With an inverter air conditioning system, such as Fujitsu, Daikin or Mitsubishi Electric, these motors have a different design.
You see, when you turn on an inverter, the motor starts slowly so it doesn’t use a lot of power, then the motor slowly ramps up to full power on a sliding scale. This way, the system uses less power to initially start up.

As the duct system gets closer to the temperature you requested in your home, the motor will begin to slow down, thus using less electricity. And as a bonus, the temperature in your home will remain more constant, assuming heat loading has been done and you’ve sized your unit correctly.

The end result is that the motor doesn’t have to come to a complete stop and therefore doesn’t use a lot of electricity trying to overcome inertia trying to get the motor to start from a complete stop.

They are a very good technology to use compared to conventional systems, however my personal opinion is that Digital Scroll units will offer even more energy savings and temperature control.

AN ADVERT. DO NOT SUBSIZE YOUR INVERTER SYSTEM OR YOU WILL USE AT LEAST 10% MORE ELECTRICITY THAN A CONVENTIONAL AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM.

I will talk more about this next time.
