I always remember that during my childhood going to the coast was a real joy, since a devoted diver like me enjoys the underwater landscapes of coral reefs of incomparable beauty and the company of crustaceans and fish of bright colors. Diving and snorkeling are activities of such tranquility that many people consider them incomparable.

When it comes to incredible tourist attractions, Cuba’s coral reefs are privileged for their rich, exuberant and varied underwater life. Coral reefs cover more than 95% of the edge of the Cuban marine platform (more than 3,200 km) and appear in abundant scattered areas. For this reason, together with the Bahamas, it occupies the first place in extension per country in the Western Atlantic. There are even coral formations developing barriers that, in some places, reach the surface.

The limpid transparency of the waters of the Cuban archipelago, the well-preserved seabeds with the slightest contamination, and the diversity of its underwater flora and fauna, make the island one of the best-preserved underwater ecosystems in the region. Most of the Cuban reefs are in relatively good condition, severe pollution problems only affect 2% of them, mainly near urban areas and with easy access.

Beneath the surface, the Cuban archipelago is a natural treasure, a sunken paradise of algae, sea anemones, starfish, stony and soft corals, sponges, tubes or branches; sumptuous gorgonians that sway with the waves; starfish, crustaceans and lively fish that form multicolored clouds around the divers. Some even eat from the hands of divers! In these warm crystalline waters (exceeding 24ºC all year round) you will find the habitat of a peculiar and fascinating fauna that leaves you with a feeling of permanent invitation to relaxation.

If you are a keen diver and eager to witness pristine coral reefs, then you must go to Maria La Gorda. This site has been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Located in the province of Pinar del Río, it is a great setting for diving and ecotourism due to its abundant marine species and its spectacular coral reefs. Likewise, some of the most attractive places to observe a great variety of underwater fauna are found within the Cuban keys: Cayo Levisa, Cayo Largo, Cayo Santa María, Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo and Cayo Saetía, among others. You will immediately fall in love with the diaphanous blue of these waters where the eye has a long reach to witness the fascinating marine habitat, as if the sea were a kind of mirror. Many visitors compare these sites to diving in aquariums; It should definitely be on every diver’s travel itinerary.

Also, here are some highlights for your trip: Playa Santa Lucía, on the north coast of Camagüey province, has the largest coral reef in Cuba and the second largest in the world at 36 kilometers (22 miles) long. This reef is the longest of its kind in the Western Hemisphere! And you won’t want to miss the bull shark show organized by local monitors; During the show, these fascinating creatures will literally eat from the hands of the instructors.
